The Difference Between Natural & Organic Beauty
Natural and organic skincare share many of the same standards, mainly that they are both made with plant matter. The differences come about in the actual ingredients in them. Organic skincare has more limitations than natural skincare, as there are a lot more natural actives that can be used in beauty products than organic actives. Ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid for example cannot be obtained organically. However, it is an amazing beauty ingredient for hydrating and plumping skin. This is why at Nakin we class ourselves as a natural skincare company as we use modern plant actives that cannot always be obtained organically. The fact that they are natural means that they are kind to skin and help skin to flourish and thrive holistically when compared to synthetic skincare.
The truth is that the main factor is not whether an ingredient is natural or organic, it is how much of it is in the actual product. We see so many statements on skincare products saying things like ‘made with organic lavender’ when this might mean that it has just 1% organic lavender in the whole product. Plus added to this when purchasing a product we should think about the actual ingredients within them. Organic lavender is a lovely ingredient, but it is also a cheap ingredient, and one that has limited beauty benefits. However, many natural actives like the ones that we use in our natural anti-ageing face care range have proven anti-ageing abilities.
Organisations like Cosmos and the Soil Association are able to certify whether products are organic, by going through the ingredients list and ensuring that the product contains over a certain amount of organic content. Their requirements are that a product can only be labelled as organic if over 95% of the ingredients are organic. Although the rules are more complex than this and there are different ways to express the organic content of a product. There are lots of beauty brands that have products certified by organisations like Cosmos, the Soil Association or Ecocert. However, they have quite high charges attached with this, which invariably puts the cost of the products up. At Nakin we choose not to be certified by these organisations for this reason, instead as an ethical company we ensure that our products contain as much natural ingredients as possible and meet high quality standards. Our products are also free from undesirable ingredients like parabens, mineral oil, silicones, PEGs, phthalates, synthetic dye and fragrance.
With natural and organic beauty products it is also as much about what a beauty product does not contain. A product might say it is made with organic ingredients, but also be filled with other ingredients that are not so desirable. This is well known in the industry as green washing, so we need to take care when purchasing beauty products.
The terms "natural" and "organic" are often used interchangeably in the beauty industry, but they hold distinct meanings. Natural beauty products are typically derived from ingredients found in nature, such as plants, minerals, and animal by-products. These ingredients undergo minimal processing and do not contain synthetic compounds or artificial additives. On the other hand, organic beauty products must adhere to stricter standards. They consist of ingredients that are cultivated without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). To be labelled as organic, products often need to be certified by recognised bodies that ensure compliance with these stringent criteria. These criteria often mean that lots of amazing natural active ingredients are not allowed to be used in face products, and is the reason why Nakin have not chosen an organic status, and instead describe ourselves as a natural brand. Understanding these differences can help us to make more informed and conscious choices in their skincare and beauty routines.
There is a growing trend towards using natural and organic beauty products which is definitely needed, as people become more aware of the potential health and environmental benefits. Many believe that natural and organic products are safer and gentler on the skin, as they do not contain harsh chemicals or toxins that can potentially irritate or harm the body. Additionally, using natural organic ingredients in beauty products may also have a positive impact on the environment, as it reduces the use of synthetic chemicals that can be harmful to ecosystems.
However, it is important to note that just because a product is labeled as "natural" or "organic" does not necessarily mean it is completely free from potentially harmful ingredients.
