Why We Need to be Careful of Skin Fads

Why We Need to be Careful of Skin Fads

At Nakin we steer well away of skin fads as we believe in timeless natural products that are kind to our skin whatever our age, and whatever the year or decade. Sadly though, with the rise in social media there seems to also have been a rise in skin fads, sometimes using products and ingredients that can be quite harsh to our skin.

At Nakin we recommend looking carefully into any new skincare trend, especially if it involves strong ingredients. A fad is a trend that gains sudden popularity and widespread appeal for a short period of time, often characterised by a rapid rise, and fall in interest. Fads can manifest in various forms, and there seems so many beauty focussed ones at the moment. Unlike enduring trends, which may have a lasting impact, fads tend to be transient and are driven by novelty, social influence, or marketing hype. As their excitement wanes, fads typically fade away, but sometimes our skin can have been disrupted in the process.

In the age of social media and influencer culture, skincare fads can spread like wildfire, enticing us to try the latest trends often before understanding their consequences. While some innovations may offer genuine benefits and can be time saving or offer solutions to concerns, others can be ineffective or even harmful. Ingredients touted as miracle solutions may not be suitable for all skin types, leading to adverse reactions or exacerbating existing skin conditions. Additionally, these fads can divert attention from established skincare practices like our more traditional routine, which promotes long-term skin health. It is crucial to approach trends with care, conducting thorough research to ensure that any new product or regimen aligns with our skin needs and overall well-being.

The allure of quick fixes and miraculous transformations can blind use from potential risks associated with skincare fads. One common concern that we have at Nakin is the promotion of products that contain really harsh ingredients, such as using glycolic acid cleansers frequently, which we feel are harsh to our skin.

Another thing that we dislike is the promotion of strong skincare routines to the young, who do not need such products. There is a psychological impact on individuals who feel pressured to conform to ever-changing beauty standards promoted by these fads. The constant bombardment of flawless skin images on social media can create unrealistic expectations and perpetuate feelings of inadequacy. This can also lead to excessive spending on unnecessary products and a cycle of chasing after unattainable perfection.

With the ever-evolving landscape of skincare trends, it is crucial to approach them with caution and do thorough research before incorporating them into one's routine. This includes understanding the ingredients, their potential benefits, and any known risks or side effects. It is also essential to consider our individual skin needs, such as sensitivity, allergies, and current skin conditions.
