Why Coconut Oil Should Not Be Used on The Face

Over the last couple of decades Coconut Oil has become hugely popular for skin, as it is such a nutritious oil. It is calming, hydrating, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial and it now appears in masses of skin and hair care products. At Nakin though we do not recommend using face products that contain pure coconut oil, or ever using neat coconut oil on the face area. This is because it is an extraordinarily rich fatty oil that can clog pores and is why we never use it in our natural anti-ageing skincare.
At Nakin we love coconuts and are fully on board with the coconut craze drinking coconut water and milk, plus using coconut oil in hair and body products. We even use lots of emulsifiers that are derived from coconuts in our natural anti-ageing face products and recognise that it has many beauty benefits, but when it comes to using pure coconut oil on our faces, it is just too rich.
Why Coconut Oil Should Not Be Used on The Face
Coconut oil has a high amount of saturated fats which is why it is so oily for skin. Plant oils can be fantastic for skin, and we love to use many of them, however, we feel that coconut oil is too rich for the face. Plant oils have a rating system to show how comedogenic that they are, and coconut oil is up there as one of the most comedogenic with a rating of 4 out of 5. The comedogenic rating scores plant oils based on how pore clogging that they are. So, as it is coming out as a four this shows that it can be clogging, and is the main reason that we advise not to use coconut oil in face care products.
If you have dry skin then you may feel that as coconut oil is so rich and fatty it will be beneficial, however, even those with dry skin often have some oilier patches on the t-zone, or have occasional breakouts. Even for those with very dry skin, or dry patches such as on the cheeks, we still do not recommend coconut oil, as it is not the best oil for seeping into skin and offering the deep-down invisible hydration that many plant oils offer.
At Nakin instead of using coconut oil in our products we use less comedogenic oils that still offer skin a huge amount of nutrition with vitamins, minerals and omega oils, as well as lots of anti-inflammatory and calming compounds. This includes beautiful oils like jojoba, argan, baobab and marigold. Plant oils are just one type of ingredient that we use in our skincare and our products are filled with lots of other plant actives such as hyaluronic acid, seaweed and pomegranate extract. At Nakin we have a full range of stunning face care that takes all skin types into account and is filled with high quality natural ingredients. Alternatives to Coconut Oil
Coconut oil, often lauded for its natural moisturising properties, is not always ideal for use on facial skin. One primary concern is its comedogenic nature, meaning it can clog pores and lead to acne and breakouts, particularly for those with oily or acne-prone skin. Furthermore, coconut oil forms a barrier on the skin's surface, which may trap dirt, bacteria, and sebum, exacerbating skin issues. While it may work for some people with extremely dry skin, we still do not recommend it as instead of seeping into skin in the way we would want it to, it sits of the surface leaving a greasy film, which is very different to the hydrated and moisturised look that we all prefer.
There are other alternatives to coconut oil that may be better suited for facial skincare. One such alternative is almond oil, which is lighter in texture and less likely to clog pores. It also contains high levels of vitamin E, making it a nourishing option for dry or sensitive skin. Another option is jojoba oil, which has a similar consistency to our skin's natural sebum. This means it can help balance and regulate the production of oil, making it suitable for all skin types. Additionally, jojoba oil has anti-inflammatory properties and can help soothe irritated skin.
For those looking for a more luxurious option, argan oil is known for its anti-ageing benefits. It is rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids, making it a potent moisturiser that can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
When choosing a natural oil for facial skincare, it's important to consider your individual skin type and needs. Some oils may work better for certain skin concerns, such as acne or ageing, while others may be more beneficial for overall hydration. It's also important to note that not all natural oils are created equal, so it's best to do research and opt for high-quality products from reputable brands. If you are looking for the perfect face oil blend for your face then try our Nakin Revitalising Face Oil. Using a combination of different oils in your skincare routine such as the special blend in our oil can provide a range of benefits. For example, it has almond oil, argan, baobab, peach and jojoba to create a nourishing and anti-ageing blend. Incorporating natural oils into your skincare routine can have many benefits from skin calming, to oil balancing and giving our complexions a gorgeous glow.
While coconut oil has gained popularity in recent years for its moisturising properties, there are other natural oils that may be better suited for facial skincare. Almond oil, jojoba oil, and argan oil are just a few examples of alternatives that offer unique benefits for different skin types and concerns. We love to use these at Nakin and hope that you find they suit your skin perfectly.
