When Should You Apply Eye Cream?

Eye creams are an essential part of every skincare routine as they nourish, hydrate and revive the skin around the eyes. Applying them at the correct point in your skincare routine will allow you to get the best out of them. Eye creams are specially developed for the unique area of skin around the eyes. The reason that we have separate eye creams in the first place is because the skin around the eyes is different to the skin on the rest of the face and neck. It is much thinner, which means that it is more prone to damage and wrinkling. It also lacks sebaceous glands, so can get dry and therefore benefits from the hydration that an eye cream provides. The area around the eyes is likely to develop lines, dark circles and puffing, so the best anti-ageing eye cream formulas are specially made to tackle these concerns.

We use cleansing products on the eye area, to keep this delicate area clean and to remove make-up. But other than that, the only face product used on the eye area is an eye cream. So, in some respects you could use an eye cream at any point in your face routine after cleansing. However, we always recommend applying it straight after cleansing, but before applying face treatments and face cream moisturisers.

The reason that an eye cream should go on before a serum, oil or face cream is because any good eye cream like our Natural Eye Cream Complex will be made with amazing plant extracts and will have a light springy consistency. This means that it will not weigh the skin around the eyes down, which is very important as you don’t want to put any weight on the delicate skin around the eyes, that could over time cause sagging and drooping. A light springy eye cream will also seep easily into skin and get those beautiful plant actives working deep down in the skin cells. There will inevitably be some overlap between an eye cream and other face products. This tends to happen on the sides of the eyes, the upper cheek and crows’ feet area and bridge of the nose. So, applying face treatments like serums and oils, plus face creams after an eye cream, means that they go over the top of the eye cream and do not stop it working its magic. Instead they will help seal in moisture and also add additional nutrients to the eye area.

To apply our award-winning Eye Cream Complex, simply dab a small amount to each of the the ring fingers and then gentle pat with the ring fingers all around the orbital bones, which is the bone that surrounds the eye. Remember not to apply it too close to the eye or on the eye lids, as the cream will naturally spread.
