What Is Face Toner
At Nakin we love a good face toner as it is an excellent and easy way to double cleanse the face, while refreshing, treating and toning at the same time. Face Toners are the part in the skin care regime that comes after cleansing, but before applying treatments and creams. They are used in both the morning and evening, and the only time we suggest not using them is when applying a liquid exfoliator like our Nakin Exfoliating Radiance Tonic, as it is not needed to use both at the same time. Face toners have been popular in the last century and came from the word tonic water, and they are generally a watery liquid. Toners are also known as tonics, pre-lotions, astringents and skin fresheners. Their main purpose is to remove the last traces of cleanser, freshen skin and prepare it for facial treatments applied afterwards.
Why We Love Face Toners
- Toners act as a double cleanse; which is extremely important to ensure all the face is thoroughly cleansed from make-up, pollution, oil and bacteria.
- A good toner such as our Anti-Ageing Face Toner is the fastest way to freshen skin, due to its natural detoxing energising active ingredients.
- Good toners prepare skin to be better receptive to receive the active ingredients in serums, oils and creams.
How to Choose the Right Toner for Your Skin Type
When you're looking for a new toner it can get quite overwhelming, as there are so many available and they also range from a few pounds to hundreds. When choosing a toner, we always recommend a natural one, and a product suitable for your skin type. Some toners that are available contain really strong synthetic ingredients that we feel are too much for our skin to accept, and so can cause irritation. High quality natural face toners like Nakin’s Purifying Face Toner will work with all skin types, because it contains skin loving active ingredients that are not drying, nor will they cause oil production. Instead it balances skin out and cleanses with Seaweed and Witch Hazel, also conditioning with Aloe and Hyaluronic Acid. Nakin’s toner works for all skin types as we recognise that most of us have a mix of skin types, we might be oily but with dehydration, or combination with sensitivity.
Some toners are made only for specific skin types. If you have oily skin, then these are likely to be more astringent; but be careful not to strip the skin. The aim is only to get rid of excess oil to prevent breakouts and not to make skin too dry. Drying out oily skin is not the best way to balance oiliness. Likewise, with dry skin, a toner should not make it too oily. Dry skin toners should be more hydrating, but without putting any stress onto skin. Toners made for combination skin work to refresh, hydrate and balance. A good toner like our Purifying Face Toner works with all skin types as the ingredients are kind and nourishing.
Is Face Toner Essential to Use
At Nakin, we always recommend using a toner. It completes the cleansing process by ensuring all cleanser is removed, plus clearing the skin of any remaining dirt or blockages, that can prevent skin treatments from working effectively. This helps to get the most out of even the best skincare products. As well as this a good toner will help the complexion by soothing, freshening, refining, tightening and stimulating the blood circulation and skin. If you prefer not to use a face toner then take extra care to remove your face cleanser with lots of water. So, if you use our natural cleansing milk then you may want to apply it when in the shower, and after massaging skin the shower water will ensure that it is rinsed off thoroughly.
Benefits of Using Face Toner
There are so many benefits to using a face toner. In part it will depend on the active ingredients included in the toner, but the best face toner will benefit skin as below.
- The unique runny liquid form means that actives can reach the skin in a different way to other cosmetic products.
- Toner removes the last traces of debris and cleanser.
- Toners reach deep down into epidermis and dermis to remove impurities, refresh, stimulate & condition skin.
- They preparing skin to better accept and absorb treatments applied after toning.
The Difference Between Face Toner and Micellar Water
Micellar waters differ from toners as they act as a kind of all-in-one cleanser and toner. Micellar water has an oilier structure than a toner, to allow it to remove make-up more easily. At Nakin though we prefer the two-step cleansing method, with a cleansing milk and toner. This is because the cleansing milk is better at dislodging dirt and debris, and a toner is more superior in reaching deep down into skin to clear and rejuvenate. Micellar waters can also contain strong cleansing agents that we believe should not be left on skin and are more suited to a removable cleansing product, such as a face wash.
When and How to Apply Face Toner
Apply your face toner after cleansing skin and follow this morning plus evening for best results. Toners should be applied with a cotton pad and then wiped over skin, including all the face, neck and close to the ears. This is the most hygienic way to use the toner and ensures any last particles of make-up, cleanser or grime will be removed. Use both sides of the cotton pad for the most economical method. If needed the toner application can be repeated, so it is applied twice each time. Some people prefer to apply a toner directly to their face, by applying the toner to the fingertips and applying it this way. We do not recommend that face toners are applied with a cloth, as the cloth will soak up a lot of the product and the cloth would need to be washed regularly.
