How to Do a DIY Manicure

How to Do a DIY Manicure

If your nails are in need of some loving care but going to the salon is not an option, then keep them looking neat, trim and gorgeous with an at home manicure. At Nakin we love all things natural and this is why we developed our anti-ageing skincare made from the best plant actives. So, we tend to prefer a natural look for nails, without polish. Although we love the look of pretty painted nails, and these days there are some natural polish and polish remover options. However you like your nails to look, read on for our step-by-step DIY manicure guide, which applies to both hands and feet.

  1. Get Set-Up

Before embarking on a DIY manicure, it is a good idea to do it at a time where you have a spare hour and will not be disturbed. Also, find an area where it is easy to get to the nails on your hands and feet and where you have enough workspace to hold all of the equipment. This includes nail scissors, a file, a cuticle tool, cuticle oil, nail buffer, polish and hand cream.

  1. Remove Old Nail Polish

If you have old polish on your nails, then begin by removing this. Some polish like gel versions is hard to remove and needs a special product to take it off. Gels used to require a salon treatment to take it off. However, these days there are many home gel removers and they have really come down in price, although take care to read the instructions on use. Whatever the polish remover, they can contain quite harsh ingredients, so wash hands well after the polish has been taken off.

  1. Cut & File Nails

We recommend only filing nails instead of cutting them, and an easy way to keep on top of this is to get in the habit of filing your nails every day or two. This keeps them in a nice neat shape all the time. If they do need cutting, then it is worth investing in some good nail scissors that have a slight curve. This makes it easier to achieve a good shape. When cutting nails, start with your non dominant hand, as this is when your attention will be most focussed. The nail length and nail shape that you choose is very much dependant on personal taste.

  1. Cuticles

One of the big differences between a salon and DIY manicure is the cuticle treatment. Many people miss this step when doing their nails at home. To do your cuticles soak the nails plus remove any excess cuticle and push them back with a tool. Finish by massaging in a conditioning cuticle treatment oil.

  1. Buff

If you like a natural look then buffing up the nails is a good option. An easy way to buff is to sweep the roughest part of the nail buffer from the base of the nail to the tip. Then repeat this but with the less rough edge of the buffer. Then repeat this again with the smooth part of the buffer, to get a gorgeous shine to the nail.

  1. Polish

Nail polish can brighten up any look and give a smart appearance. It is easy to buy salon quality nail polish for home use. As with nail cutting, when applying polish start with the less dominant hand, so when your attention wanes you will be painting the easier hand. Take your time and do not rush this step. If you find that your nail polish always looks messy and goes onto the skin around the nail, then an easy way to prevent this is to apply a balm carefully on the skin around the nails. It is worth it for a professional finish. For those that love the gorgeous looking gel manicures, then there are so many at home options available. It is an investment, especially as you need an LED lamp. However, this is a one-off purchase and can be used again and again. If you like polish but still want a natural look, then a nude strengthening nail treatment is a good choice.

  1. Hand Cream

Now that your nails are looking lovely, finish the manicure with a nice natural hand cream to soften and condition hands. Take care to avoid the nail area and not chip or smudge any polish.
