Help! My Face is Irritated from Using Skincare Products

At Nakin we hear so much about how skincare products have caused irritation to the face, with customers seeking us out for kind skincare products that are still effective. Many customers will have used treatments that have caused irritation, and now instead of peeling away skin layers they just want to keep their skin happy and decrease signs of ageing, without the expense of their skin health.

This is where Nakin can help and is exactly what we are about, helping skin to look as good as it can naturally. We are always shocked about the amount of strong synthetic ingredients that are appearing in so many cleansers and treatments. At Nakin all of our natural anti-ageing face products are free of the types of anti-ageing ingredients that cause irritation for so many, such as strong cleansing agents, retinol, vitamin C and glycolic acid. Instead, we use plant ingredients for our anti-agers that have skin boosting properties, and work in harmony with our skin at the same time.

If your skin is aggravated or red after using face products then it sounds like your skin barrier has been irritated, and so the best thing to do is to start with is to work on healing and calming it. Everything in our range is made with sensitive skin in mind, plus the plant actives and extracts are lovely for skin. One product that we would definitely recommend is our Revitalising Face Oil as it is hydrating and nourishing, plus healing and calming. If your skin is really irritated, then you might just want to cleanse with water and use this until it has recovered. Then if you are looking for a full routine you could try the products below, which is simple but effective. Please carry out a patch test of the products before using them fully, as with any new product.

  • Begin your routine with our Advanced Cleansing Milk which is an oil-based cleanser that cleanses the face while hydrating and comforting at the same time with the hyaluronic acid and the plant cleansing and conditioning extracts.
  • Use our Eye Cream Complex for the eye area which is hydrating, line smoothing and energising from its plant peptide, hyaluronic acid and stimulating plant and marine extracts.
  • Then use our Revitalising Face Oil for your face and neck. The oil is rich and nutritious without being greasy. It helps to heal the skin barrier and immediately calms skin and leaves a lovely glow, plus is great at helping with stressed skin issues like dryness or sensitivity.
  • Seal all the goodness in with our Active Dew Face Cream which hydrates, nourishes and protects the skin with hyaluronic acid, cassia, pomegranate and plant oils. This is for day and night use as it does not contain SPF.

If you like to have a thorough anti-ageing routine then we also have some other products that you might be interested in, which is our Purifying Face Toner, Exfoliating Radiance Tonic, and Performance Face Serum. The toner makes a lovely double cleanse, and the exfoliator plus serum are our strongest anti-ageing products for skin tone issues and lines. The Exfoliator can be used up to nightly or as required, and has fruit AHAs in, which are excellent for an uneven skin tone and wrinkles, and we have great reports from customers with sensitive skin, however, they are powerful ingredients. Our Performance Face Serum has a plant peptide for lines, as well as lots of other anti-ageing ingredients. If you only want to use one treatment this is better for lines, but we suggest the face oil if skin is irritated, as it is so good for skin barrier repair. Everything in the range can be found here

Why Some Skincare Products Can Be So Irritating to Skin

Skin is the largest organ in our body, and it serves as a protective barrier against external factors such as UV radiation, pollution, and microorganisms. In addition to its role as a physical barrier, skin also plays an important role in regulating body temperature, maintaining hydration levels, and providing sensory information.

With such an important function, it is essential to take care of our skin properly. One way to take care of our skin is by using good natural face care products like ours. However, not all skincare products are created equal. Many contain synthetic ingredients that can be harsh and irritating to the skin.

Understanding Irritation

Before we dive into the reasons why some skincare products can be irritating, it is essential to understand what irritation is. Irritation is a reaction that occurs when our skin comes in contact with an irritant. It can manifest as redness, itching, burning sensation, or even blisters. Our skin reacts this way as a defence mechanism against potential harm.

Harsh Ingredients That Cause Irritation

There are several common ingredients in skincare products that can cause irritation to the skin. These include:

  • Fragrances: Artificial fragrances are one of the top culprits of skin irritation. They may smell nice, but they can cause allergic reactions and irritate sensitive skin.
  • Vitamin C: This is often used in skincare products. However, it is a synthetic ingredient that can cause irritation and disrupt the skin's barrier function, leading to sensitivity.
  • Glycolic Acid: This is commonly found in cleansers as they have an exfoliating effect. However, it can be harsh and strip the skin's natural oils, causing dryness and irritation.
  • Essential Oils: While some essential oils can have beneficial properties for the skin, they can also be irritating if used in high concentrations.

How to Choose Gentle Skincare Products

To avoid skin irritation, we recommend always choosing gentle skincare products like Nakin’s that are kind to all skin types. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Read the ingredients list: Avoid products with synthetic fragrances, parabens, glycolic acid and lots of essential oils, and especially if you have sensitive skin.
  • Patch test: Before using a new product, patch test it on a small area of your skin to check for any adverse reactions.
  • Look for gentle and soothing ingredients: The plant ingredients we use like aloe vera, argan oil, and green tea have anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe and calm irritated skin.
  • Stick to simple skincare routines: Using too many products with harsh ingredients can overwhelm the skin and cause irritation.
