Beauty & Sustainability
At Nakin we love beauty and we love the planet, so being a sustainable skincare brand is high on our priority list. We love beauty with a conscience. There is no choice with this, as skincare can only be beautiful if it is also sustainable.
As with everything, it starts from the top. Nakin founder, Cris Beetham has always been a nature lover. After studying Bsc Wildlife Conservation at East London University, caring for the planet is close to her heart “Nakin is a natural skincare range that focuses on high performing products, but that’s not the only thing on the agenda. The ethics of the company are very important to me. I am a huge nature lover, and I like to live my life as naturally as possible. My passion for all things natural led to me making my own natural skincare in 2005. It’s hard to believe how much natural skincare has progressed since then. I used to use ingredients like organic Rose and Lavender, which are lovely, but as the years went buy I wanted skincare that had better performance. I really wanted to target things like lines and dullness – but without using cosmetic procedures, or harsh ingredients like Retinol. So this is why Nakin was born. I see it as the next generation of natural skincare. It uses really effective plant ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Hibiscus, Pomegranate and Seaweed. It’s essential that the products work, but they also have to be kind to the environment. “
There’s two big challenges that all beauty companies face. One is with ingredients, and the other is packaging. So here’s how Nakin work towards these.
At Nakin all of our ingredients are sustainable, and don’t have a negative impact on the environment. Nakin products are as natural as they can be, and completely biodegradable. This is unlike some conventional skincare, because ingredients like Silicones do not biodegrade. We wish they were banned, like the recent government ruling on plastic micro-beads. They were used in products like exfoliators and toothpastes, but sadly they made their way into many eco-systems.
Nakin always purchase ingredients from suppliers committed to sustainability. Everyone has heard about the use of Palm Oil, and the damaging effects on the environment from deforestation. Palm Oil is found in about 50% of products in a supermarket, mostly in food and personal care. At Nakin we never use Palm Oil directly as an ingredient, but it is found indirectly in some skincare ingredients, like plant emulsifiers. This is why we ensure that our ingredients are always from sustainable farming methods.
The other big challenge is plastic waste. This is a really hot topic, and we have all seen the problems on the news, particularly in the marine environment. It’s a really tricky one because plastic is such a convenient material. At Nakin our packaging is all purchased responsibly from a UK company, and is as recyclable as possible. We don’t use oversized bottles - that make the products look huge, with big caps or air chambers. We use cardboard for mailing packaging, as it’s the easiest to recycle. As Nakin grows Cris really wants to invest in the ecological side of the business “I really want the eco ethical area to be top of our agenda. As a new company we have so much to do. My dream is to donate profits to charities, to improve the green credentials of the business, and make our impact on the environment as beneficial as possible. “

Why Sustainability is Essential in Beauty Products
As all of us become more environmentally conscious and ethical in our purchasing decisions, the demand for sustainable beauty products has significantly increased. But why exactly do these products need to be sustainable? Let's explore some of the key reasons below.
Protecting the Environment
Traditional beauty products often contain chemicals and other harmful ingredients that not only impact our bodies but also have a negative impact on the environment. These chemicals can end up in waterways, harming aquatic life, and contribute to pollution and climate change. By using sustainable ingredients and packaging, we can help minimise the environmental footprint and contribute to protecting the planet.
Prioritising Product Effectiveness
Sustainable beauty products are not only better for the environment but also for our skin in our view. By using natural, high-quality ingredients, these products are often more effective and gentler on our skin, reducing the risk of irritation and allergic reactions. This means that not only are we doing good for the planet by choosing sustainable options, but we are also taking care of ourselves.
Promoting Ethical Practices
Sustainability goes beyond just environmental impact; it also includes ethical and social responsibility. At Nakin we are a brand that prioritise cruelty-free, and animal friendly practices, ensuring that our sustainable products are ethically sourced and produced.
